I was reinstalling the flexplate (drive plate etc.) and noticed there what appeared to be a weight welded to it - as if it had been balanced at some point. Thing was - from what I could tell - it did not appear to be balancing anything (set it on the side of a table, half hanging off - it would stay when the weight was on the table, and would want to fall when the weight was in the air). I put it back on the crank the in the same position I pulled it off (I hope!). There wasn't any mention of this in the haynes manual, and I had never noticed this on other flywheels/driveplates that I had seen.
Does this work in conjunction with the harmonic balancer or to balance the torque converter in some way? Or maybe the plate was balanced and my method of testing it was off. I didn't spend a lot of time thinging about it until it was too late - (set the motor back in yesterday). I'd hate to have to pull it out again.
'79 and up 460's are "externally balanced" i.e., they have external balance weights on the flywheel or flexplate and crankshaft snout in addition to the internal crankshaft counterweights. Other motors may use this scheme, too.

I can understand it on a big engine - mine's a 302 (see signature). It just seems odd that there's a 3"x1"x1/4" thick piece of steel tacked to the back of the flexplate. It looks like it was done professionally (i.e. at the factory), which seems to eliminate the possibility of someone else having done something for a reason no one will ever know.
I'm a little suprised no one out there has seen or noticed this anywhere else on the 302 C6. But, that's a good thing for me - I don't feel like pulling the engine (or trans) back out.
302 & 351 are also externally balanced I believe. I know when the machine shop gave me the wrong flywheel back for my old 83 bronco with a 302 it had a terrible vibration. They removed quite a bit of metal to get it correctly balanced.
