So I recently let my auto shop help me with an engine swap for my '66 (I work at the HS). I'm no mechanic and the shop teacher is a chevy guy, so I need some help. I've just had a 302 rebuilt for my truck which still has it's 352 in it. I've also had a AOD tranny rebuilt to replace the orignal (c4 auto). The shop teacher isn't a pro at fords, but is willing to do the labor for free, so I couldn't pass it up, but this is what I need to know.
1) Do I need different Motor mounts or perches to do this swap (352 to 302)?
2) Are there any specific tranny problems you guys would foresee?
3) Any other helpful ideas / hindsight clues would be helpful too.
I've reseached and found that the AOD will bolt to the 302 alright, and I know that the Throttle valve cable must be adjusted correctly, but am I overlooking anything else?
PLease advise, Thanks ahead for all the help!
Yes you will need 302 perches 68-79 or 351/400 77-79, not positive but the AOD may use a different flexplate, and you will have to have the drive shaft cut to fit. I run a single shaft under my long bed.
I have a AODE that I am going to be putting in my 65 F-100 behind a 4.6L and I have verified that the transmission mount on the AODE is the same as what our trucks had on them, so that will be a direct bolt up. The AODE even uses American hardware to bolt it up, a 1/2 inch course thread bolt. I figured it would have been metric like the engine. The AODE is just an electronic version of the AOD you plan to install in your pickup.
Like John said you will have to have a new drive line made up. I use to have a C-4 in my pickup behind a 302 and the combo came out of a Fairlane. I had a drive shaft made up for that set up, and just for the heck of it I tried to see if it would fit the splines of my AODE. The good news is it did, the only problem is the out side diameter of the drive shaft splines are a little smaller and there fore will not seal to the transmission. What I am hoping to do is just swap yokes as I have the drive line for the AODE. That way I can keep the fab work to a minimum on my pickup.
