I know that there are all sorts of "tire calculators" and stuff out there, but I want some actual opinions. I have a 1990 F250 5.8 E4OD with two junk tires (three including the spare). I have a chance to get some decent cheep tires off Craigslist, but they would be smaller than those that are currently on it and smaller than the OEM listed on the info plate on the doorframe. Is it a bad idea to buy these tires?
Current tires 265/75/16
OEM on info plate 235/85/16
Want to buy 225/75/16
With that small of a jump from the OEM, they should be fine. The tread width is a little smaller and it will affect your spedo some. When you are reading 60, you will actually be going about 55. They will also lower your truck by about an inch or two.
If you can get a good price and you can put up with the lowering and the spedo, go for it. I am doing the same with mine. I just got used to going 5 over. I just have to watch it when I drive another truck where the spedo is correct.
