I have an 84 F-150 with the 351w engine in it, well, it wasnt starting, and turns out the solenoid wasnt very good anymore, so I bought a new one and put her on there, well, upon turning the engition key, it fired up alright. Yeah, and went into an immediate high idle, which it wouldnt get out of, then when i turned the key to turn the engine off, it kept cranking and wouldnt stop, so I rushed to get the battery unhooked from everything, but I wasnt able to do if before it either ran out of gas or the battery drained. Hmm. Im thinking that the relay got stuck open and burned up the starter. But what do you all think?
I think that your starter drive might have taken a vacation. That is unless you've just changed the starter. Then I would say that you have the wrong one. It sounds like it's hanging up and not disengaging.
It also could be the solenoid is sticking closed and keeps sending power to the starter. I know you said it was new but I say new doesn't always mean better. I hope you can use this.
Yeha, i figured that the solenoid got stuck as well, but its alright...its got WARRANTY! haha. Im a dork, but yeah, it was also a new starter, after i put it on it still would just clicked, so I moved on to switching the solenoid.
Okay, I took the silinoid back and got myself a new replacement one and put it on there, it fired up beautifully, so I turned it off and it stopped no problem, then I took it to get gas and to a few other places. I parked on the street because there was company at my house and when I went to move it back into the driveway, it did the same gosh darnn thing. I really doubt I got two bad silinoids in a row, and it was working fine, then just stopped. So would you think that there is a faulty wire or a short in my ignition somewhere? This is really starting to cause some headaches...
Thanks
Daniel
Dis-connect the wire at the start terminal of the solinoid. hook up a switch from bat+ to the start terminal. Use the switch to crank the engine (turn ign sw on). If this works ok, you probably have a bad ign switch.
Id really like to try that Mike, but before I do that im gonna have to get myself a hold of yet another silinoid, because this one is still stuck open, and I got everything all hooked back up this morning and I cant put the negative battery connection back on its post becuase the silinoid is stuck open, so it pops and sparks, and if you hold it there much after that it starts spinning ths starter up again, so the silinoid is still stuck in the open position. Drat. I guess I'll just get another one later on and then tell you if that works or not.
Thanks
Daniel
okay, so i did that and it cranked up the engine alright, we tested it several times and it worked fine all times, so I went and bought a new ignition starter switch.
And after installing a new ignition swtich, we went to turn it on and it still had the exact same results that I described in the initial post. So yeah. What do you all figure is the problem. The solinoid just gets stuck opne no matter what, im on the third NEW one right now, new starter switch too. The solinoid worked out just fine before we started the ignition, so I think that it may be something when I initially turn the key, because even after I pull the key out it keeps cranking... I think that something somewhere has got to be sticking.
OK, let's try this. do whatever it is that you do when the solenoid sticks closed and then try pulling first the START wire off (it should be the small red wire with a blue stripe going to the small post marked S) and if it still keeps cranking, pull the wire off the small post marked I. Let me know what happens and when.
That's even better. Try it and let me know. I'd also like to know what circumstances are surrounding the solenoid "sticking". Does it start cranking as soon as you put the battery cable on or do you have to hit the key first?
