302 overheating

i got a 73 302 engine and it gets too hot. i have replaced the following: thermostat, radiatior, fan clutch with a flax fan, waterpump, bypassed the heater core, radiator fluid, and all hoses. it still gets hot. now, i have not tried eplacing the sensor or checking the guage (they are next on my list). but other than that, is there anything alse i could be missing.

thanks a bunch,
herunar

If the guage and sender check out OK, it is possible that you have a blockage in the cooling system, especially if it has not been well maintained over the years. A likely place would be plugged head gasket orifices. You may also be dealing with a blown head gasket or a cracked head.

I would first check with a good mechanical temperature guage. I have heard that blocks that have been bored will sometimes overheat but can't prove it. I had a 302 that would overheat at idle but was ok on the highway. You might check into a better water pump, different ones are out there.

I have a 79 F-150 that was doing the same thing. I had replaced the thermostat twice and the water pump once. I flushed it out and no matter what, it overheated. Knowing it couldnt be overheating, I replaced the gauge regulator on the back of the dash unit. Believe it or not that was all it was. All that work for a $9.00 push-on regulator.

I alway test a thermostat before I put it in. I've come across a few that don't work or work marginally. I just put them in a cup of boiling water and make sure they open up.

Other than that I would check the temperature sensor unit that screws into the intake manifold. Make sure it has a good contract between the threads for ground. Don't put teflon tape on the threads or it won't work right.

The other thing I have experience with is a blown head gasket that will cause overheating. You can tell if your coolant gets all foamed up.
