check engine light
'99 Ranger, 3.0, x-cab, 96,000 miles
Today the c e light came on for the first time ever. Top gear stopped working and I had to downshift to 2. ABS light stayed on as did O/D off light. Speedometer also stopped working. I don't have code reader. Anyone have any idea what happened? Going to shop Monday.

Rockledge, you're right. Picked up the truck today. Mechanic told me it was ABS speed sensor perched on the transfer case, he was in a hurry. All lights are normal and it runs great as always even at 95,000 mi. Wish I had time to do it myself but I was swamped.

Stopped back today because owner's card was left. He asked if ce light was off and shifting OK. I gather the sensor is different for 4 way ABS and 2 way. Mine is two wheel. He said before the store first sent the wrong sensor. He didn't take any money the day I got it back because it's a local shop and I'm going back Friday for our Taurus inspection. He might have been unsure if it was done right because he seemed relieved when I said it was OK. Truth is the ce light came on for about one minute on the way to work this AM and scared me but never lit up again. Thought I noticed one clunky shift, too but hope I'm imagining it.
