Question Mystery Box

Hey guys. I have an issue here with a box on the side of my steering column. The box is pictured below. I did believe that it was an overdrive but now I'm not so sure. I don't see an overdrive unit on my drive train anywhere. The lever is spring loaded and I can't see where any of the wiring is coming from or going to.

The only other thing I can think it might be is a trailer brake controller-
Is that a hard line coming out the top of it?

On edit:
Damn you! Posting at the same time-

Yes it is a hard line coming out the top. That make it a brake controller?

I have to agree with Ford and Turbo....That box was something 'Jerry Rigged', and most likely for a towing application.

That one is an electric one that couples into the hydraulics. As you apply the brakes it moves the rehostat to apply the power to the brakes. Looks like it was installed when the truck was new.

Well I'm sure its something I can do without. I have no need to tow so I see no reason to keep it. I just keep banging a knee into the bloody thing when I get in the truck.

It wasn't jurry rigged on there that is how you mounted them in the old days. they are illeagle to sell as the lines rub the boddy and can leak s=causig a loss of breaks.

Just back track the line to where it ties into the brake line, most likely at the master and disconnect it, cap/plug the fitting or remove the tee as aplicable, and pull it all.

I found a similar one in a 68 cab I picked up, except it was mounted under the dash like a regular brake controller.
They weren't a bad system aside from leaks and causing a bit of a soft pedal, they were a really good way to get truly proportional braking control.
I'm just waiting for a good system that uses some sort of brake pressure transducer to do the same job.

They definitely were better for proportional control. I used a truck and trailer years ago that had Hydraulics. really good brake control. Really unipue coupler for the hoses and a small master cylinder for a break away.
