What is the proper terminology for the overhead console in our trucks that tell the gas mileage. i'm looking at putting one in my XLT and got to find where to get the parts and install. Either that or trade my 04 in on a 05 or up? I know there are alot of upgrades in 05. Anyhow, a little help here?
its the overhead message center...I bought mine from directfordparts.com about a month ago because my old one was burnt out...They are by FAR the cheapest at 94 dollars.
You can get a "Scangauge" that gives you the lie-o-meter function as well as others. Its something else to consider and is way easier than installing an overhead console. I have one on mine.
I have the version I. I think its great even though mine doesnt work the best (My OBD2 pin or scangage has a weak pin, not sure which). Basically its anouther set of digital gauges. I monitor:
RPM
Instantaineous MPG
Instantaineous Fuel usage (GPH)
Coolant temp (The dash gauge is absolute crap and you will see that with a scangauge)
Intake air temp (Its an outdoor thermometer)
Digital speedometer readout.
It monitors many more.
One other key feature is its a code reader and can clear codes as well.
Yes 4 at a time and it does both, I said that I was having trouble with one of the pins on mine, mine doesnt always display MPH properly( It shows 0 while I am moving so the instantaineous shows 0MPG at times but the fuel flow always shows). So on mine it wont do an average but I hand calculate anyways for that, I like the instantaineous feature. I highly recomend the product.
Aftermarket electronic gauges might do what you want.
But a bit of info for you - starting in '05, Ford did not put the messaging in the overhead console. They moved the messaging center to the middle of the gauge cluster and it's all PCM controlled. That includes the outside temperature and compass feature. Not so great in my opinion, since your passengers might well like to see the outside temp too.
You can get one with all the computer outputs or you can get one pulled from an F150 that fits perfectly but just has temperature and compass, and is simpler to wire in. That's the one I did. Pics in my gallery.
Mine is a 04, I really would like to have the gas mileage feature too but that looks really clean.
I think the '04 is the last year where it is easier to wire it up. I kind of wanted those features too, but Olbird talked me out of it on my '06 because of how many PCM wires I would have to trace and tap. If you think you want one, just contact George (Olbird) and ask him what's involved. It won't be as easy as hooking up a OBDII scanner, but it's probably not that bad. The nice thing is that in the end it looks factory installed.
