HP and torque
One thing may just be the gearing. High gears give slow acceleration but good milage where low gears give faster accelaration with lower milage. Say that is probably what your looking at.

3.55 gears were the most common, but 3.08 and 4.10 were available. California engines had mass-air and I think the rest were still speed-density. Rated HP and torque were the same, or at least within 5.

There was a 5.0L H.O. engine for 1994, but it was only found in the Mustang. The 5.0L truck engine got a roller cam for 1994, which increased both horsepower & torque.I've noticed,too, that later 5.0L trucks seem to have more pep than earlier models. Pre-'94 engines were rated at 185 net horsepower.The 1994 & up engines were rated at 199 horsepower(with an automatic)& 205 horsepower (with a manual).
