rocker arm bolt

I heard a slight tapping in my engine which is a 86 F350 460 7.5L, so I took off the valve cover and checked the rocker arms and did find one that was a little loose. I read in the shop manual the bolt that holds the rocker arm in place that it should be torqued to 18-25 Ft Lbs. It seems like a lot. I was afraid of bending the push rods. I backed off a bit just enough so the rocker arms where barley moving. Does anyone know if you torque these bolts to 25 ft lbs will it bend the rods and will it be too tight for the rocker arms to move?

Thanks Chris F. Of Las Vegas.

in a word, no.

they are designed to be torqued to 25 ft/lbs so everything will work properly.

the rocker arm setup is a positive stop type setup. the rocker arm pivots on a fulcrum that is butted up against the head.

more than likely, tightening the bolt to spec will not get rid of the ticking. On fords because they are non-adjustable, normal wear of either the rocker arm tip, valve tip, lifter, cam, pushrods, etc causes excessive gaps that lead to the ticking. what you will find is that either you have to determine what is worn and replace or get a slightly longer pushrod to get rid of the tick or both.
