Quick question on swapping forged for powdered metal rods

I've been reading on here on how to tell if you have PMR or forged rods, and see that some of you are picking up forged rods on eBay and various places to swap in.

My question is this...are you just swapping the rods straight in? Are you getting them balanced first? The engine rebalanced? What is the weight difference in a PMR and forged rod? Are you at least measuring the crank & rods w/ bearing to ensure proper clearances?

Just curious.

Thanks.

Why are you thinking of replacing the PMRs, unless you are going for the really big mods like big turbo, big oil, and big sticks, you will be just fine with PMRs.

Oh, didn't mean to mislead...I don't even have a 7.3L yet. I'm thinking about buying one, and looking at the differences between years, and the big diff I see is the approx mid-year change in '01 to powdered metal rods. I was reading up on that, how to ID them etc, and seen that some people were swapping them out. I was just curious what process they had gone through to do that. I do a little bit of gasser engine building, so this type of thing interests me.

I don't have any big plans for mondo HP/tq, so I think that I would be fine with the PMRs. IIRC, they are good to ~400 RWHP. Was more of a curiousity question than anything.

If i were to do it, i would replace with all new rod bearings when i swapped them out. No use to change the pistons or rings/hone the cylinders if they are in perfect condition before the swap.
