damaged rearend?

yep, i believe my rear end may be doomed. when the yoke was broke, and they were working on it, to get out the pinion they had to beat on it for like 15 minutes straight with a short sledge hammer. then it took a 3/4 impact hammering for several minutes to get in back on. they put in a new seal back there too. the splines looked stressed to them. i havent had a chance to look since i got back in the country. my brother and the other mechanics said it didnt sound good for my rear-end that they had to stress it that much. what do you guys think?

I think it would be hard to say without actually seeing it. The pinnion can be a real bear sometimes. Especially if you not have any room to swing the sledge.

Why did they mess with the pinion!!! (beat on it)
No need to remove pinion to replace flange/yoke.
You are looking at a tear down now.

Didn't they use a gear puller to get the remains off the pinion?

The BFH most like tore up the pinion bearings or more.

SORRY- EDIT-EDIT: i meant getting the yoke off of the pinion had so much trouble. sorry. the yolk had to be beat off, and impacted back on. but on a junk rear-end slid on and off easy. my guess is the spline on it is slightly stressed. i will not be staging it up no more.

I'll bet the spline is twisted....which means you need a new ring an pinion. Hopefully they didn't mess up the case with that BFH and impact wrench. At the very least you will need new pinion bearings and races. IMO, I would get a new installation kit too along with the new R&P gear set. OUCH! big$$.

How did they set the pinion pre-load with an impact wrench, I'll bet they didn't. I wouldn't drive it that way or you may be buying a whole new axle assembly too.

Rebuild or replace is in the near future.

You could back off the pinion nut till its loose, then tighten to a mininum of 160ftlbs. with a decent torque wrench. Hold the yoke with a large pipe wrench across the square sides of the yoke while tightening the pinion nut, this has worked for me in the past. This is the minimum torque rating for the pinion nut on a Ford 10.25 Rear end. Without measuring the preload before removing the old yoke would be difficult to know what the preload should be. I am not sure but I think the max torque is around 200-220ftlbs. Hope that helps. Try it, you never know she could go another 100k if nothing was damaged.
Good Luck,
Justin

I would have to agree with fto ,I would just keep eye on it and check for any leaking aroun seal or oil temp too hot .If all seams well ,may run long time.
