Close ratio top loader

I am sure there are lots of close ratio top loaders in the trucks running around. I picked up a good one but after was told by a few that I wanted a wide ratio. Others told me no I was good with a close as long as I wasn't towing etc. I have a good 390, 3.53 gears and 25.5 tall tires. Tell me what you think...how does yours run? Thanks Brandon

Brandon as far as I know a close ratio transmission will have you shifting just the same as a wide ratio. The difference comes when you are towing which was pointed out. A close ratio will allow you to accellerate a tad quicker in my opinion. I wouldn't see any harm in running this tranny with the combo you have. I might opt for taller tires but that is it.

Each Type ends up at 1 to 1 so it really does not matter. a stressed close ratio will heat up faster than a wide ratio.

As to towing thats a crap shoot, mustangs and torinos were not tow vehicles.

Your engine at 75 with those gears and 25.5" tires will be spinning at 3500 RPM

Your engine at 65 will be turning 3000 RPM

Your Engine at 55 will be turning 2600 RPM

And your 390 will top at 4500 RPM @ 97.......
