front marker lights on '68

So the front marker lights from the factory turn on with the headlight switch and when the headlights turn on the front marker lights go out. This works fine on my '68 and I found out this is the way it is supposed to be.

I am looking to do somthing similar to a newer car.
Any ideas?

I started a thread here but no replies yet.

I suppose if you wired in a relay for each side(or ONE two post relay--one that has at least two sets of contacts), hook the t/s to the Normally closed side. Then power the relay with headlight circuit. This will cut the lights OFF when headlights are on. Though, you need to make sure it's only the parking light side of the bulb--not the t/s element. Pretty simple actually.

I will most likely be tapping into the existing marker light wires and not even touching the t/s wires. It's a one filiment bulb that will be lit up. I figured I would be using a relay but can't figure out how to use a power on signal (headlight power) to turn off the relay.

Wait....

So I hook the marker light to the side of the relay that is open (current flowing through all the time) and when the relay gets power from the headlight it switches the connection to the other post with nothing hooked to it thus closing the open side (open side in my viewpoint anyway) and turning of the city light.
Am I close?

Yes, that was what I meant by NORMALLY CLOSED (will be marked N/C)side of contacts. They are closed(flow power) while there is no power to coil. Once you energize the coil, it pulls the contacts open and turns off lights. Hook one side of wire to COMM(common) and the other to N/C and you're good to go. Then hook the "headlight" power wire to one side of coil, the other side of coil goes to GROUND.

Ah, I see, you are working on just a parking light bulb(not a dual element). Just wanted to clarify that the other way you needed to make sure you hooked to correct side of bulb.

You got it covered now............go to it.

Thank you

Now the next important question.
I have used relays for turing on fog lights and such but don't know much about them.
from a little research I see that a 1C relay is probably what I need but I'm not sure and not sure (except now I know to look for N/C) where to hook what power leads.

Yes I know I have a lot of questions but I am slowly learning.

The bulbs I am trying to get working are "city lights" inside the new aftermarket style headlight enclosure. I just figured I didn't need the little light on as well as the bright headlight.

Ok, the common "fog light" relay you get at parts store will have FIVE posts.

TWO will be coil power

ONE will be the COMMON (this is the arm that moves inside relay between the other contacts)
ONE will be N/C (normally closed) contact
ONE will be N/O (normally open) contact

Like I mentioned above, hook your headlight 'power' wire to one side of coil, the other side of coil will go to GROUND.

Hook 12v(always HOT or switched with key-won't really matter as long as it's fused) to the COMM post, the bulb goes on to the N/C post.

Edit: Ok, after driving home and doing some thinking I realized that you don't need to worry about isolating each side(with a relay). You can do this with just ONE relay(just like fog lights), only it will turn the lights OFF instead of ON.

Presto!! you will have "city" lights that turn off with headlights.

Older vehicles:

SIDE marker lamps did not turn off when the headlamps were turned on.

Side marker lights turned on when the headlamps were turned on.

When the headlamps were turned on, only the (front) parking lights turned off.

Parking lights are not classified as marker lights.

First use of electric marker lamps on all cars and light trucks sold in the US: 1968.

Previous years may/may not have side markers lights, but they had no bulbs in them.

European cars had electric side markers lights beginning in the 1930's.
