lol...i am good for something eh Fom?? i was going to suggest some of those anti friction additives, but can't say much as i got no experience with the rear stuff...
ok went to kal tire to discuss how much pinion bearing etc, they didnt want it but sent me to extreme transmission rebuilders. Depending on the kind of rear end im looking at $1000 if its the carrier as being the problem as well as the bearing. apparently they happen in pairs so the rear would be completely rebuilt. While i was there i inquired about rebuilding my 3spd, ya that came out to $700-1000 depending on the 3spd yada yada yada. hmmm doesnt look like ill be driving the truck this summer
We can see what there is for a differential here, you can keep the pained rear axle. There`s no use spending that kind of money if you don`t really have to......
Chances are the 78 F150 I sold last week had a decent diff, seldom do they give trouble unless low/out of oil or from excessive spinning with a stuck vehicle.
Also I would still keep looking for a newer 3 speed with synchronized gears.
What fits guys. The 70 F100 in the "graveyard goodies" can be had for 300 bucks it was complete with a 6 and a three speed. They usually have a 9 inch. Someone could probably sell the chrome to recoup purchase costs.
any 9" from 57- 72 will drop right in, as for tranny, any from 65-82 as long as it hooked up to an I6. Ill prolly stick with this rear as i already have almost 1000 into it already, its not going to break the bank. Ill just rarely drive it so as not to make it worse. I can get it done but id rather wait till other stuff is taken care of first. The original plan was to get a truck or 2 from some local auctions but with things going they way thery are with my 92 i cant really risk spending that kinda cash to pick up a truck or two to make 1 good tranny and i dont have the time to sell the truck and the wife wont have anything to do with it all. As she says, "turn the key and it goes".
Chris, that is a text book. I don't mess with the Haynes stuff if I don't have too.
$1000 would be the going rate as it takes about $500 retail worth of parts to rebuild a differential.
While I've personally rebuilt several differentials but I won't touch a 9" because 1. I don't have the service manual and 2. the adjustable side carrier bearings. I also find it better to just mess with my own parts as if I break it, I fix it.
You could use a pumpkin from any 1957-1986 truck as long as it has 28 spline axles.
