I have a 97 Explorer Sport AWD and have a "singing" noise coming from the rear axle area during acceleration. During deceleration it stops. I've been told it's the pinon bearings. I have a Hanes manual but it says nothing about this or how to change the bearings (if that is indeed the problem)...any help would be greatly appreciated.
i have heard others say they had pinion bearing troubles and had the noise. personally i have never heard a spinning bearing that was "good" when not loaded and "noisy" when loaded. -- i had the singing noise on my 2002 and thought it was related to the gear teeth mesh. kind of a whinning noise. i had just change the rear gear lube to 80-90. happened 100 miles later. i decided to try 75 w140 full synthetic and then add the friction modifier that is made for limited slip rear ends (even tho mine is not). this is recommended for the F150s.--- result is 75% of the noise is gone now, after 2 years. not sure if it is the thicker oil, or the change in viscosity which "clings" to the gear teeth. anyway, most of the noise on mine was gear teeth mesh and the oil fixed it.
Hi, i had the same singing noise, but i just find out what it was.
Its the spare weel, in the back, the tires rub the metal in low aceleration (ralenty) because the vibration is harder, thats why you hear the singin noise.
This is what i did to check it, i just realesed the weel and the noise stops.
That was not my problem. I found by changing the viscosity of the oil helped quit a bit; however, I think the core problem is the pinon bearings (Exlorer has two) that are mounted in the output shaft from the pinon (all one piece)...lucky for me.. But hey thanks anyway...never know I may run into what you described.
