I thought I had my problem solved? First I had ce light, checked codes and got IAT sensor (I can't remember the code?), I replaced that part! Reset PCM and then got ce light again? Got 0171 and 0174? Decided to let dealer diagnose and they recommended, replace upper intake gaskets, fuel rail gasket, injector O rings and EGR O ring! When purchasing the above parts from Ford dealer I asked for the lower manifold gasket as well but they (dealer) told me that the lower intake manifold gasket rarely is at fault with my original problem, so didn't replace that with the other work I did? At first it seemed ok but now the rough idle and surge has returned but no "ce" light, if I let the truck idle, in a minute or so it will run rough surge and then quit? The truck runs well while driving. Without codes I am a little unsure where to look next? The engine is 4.0 in a 96 4x4 with 187k kms.
People that I know, including myself, have had several ocassions of water in the gas.
More speculations: fuel delivery restriction, outside air not properly entering through induction system,??.
A little methyl hydrate wouldn't hurt I guess? Do you think an air or fuel restriction might not bring up a code? I don't have a volt/ohm meter (or know how to use one) or a gauge to measure fuel pressure either? I could learn!
Now I have discovered more problems! When I get in the truck and "close" the door and put the key in the ignition; my door ajar light and overhead light come on with a chime sounding? I start the truck and the chime stops but the door ajar light and overhead light stay on for several minutes. Also when I put the vehicle in drive the doors no longer lock automatically? What the heck is going on! My truck is now sitting with the negative battery terminal off and will re-connect it in a little while? I reset the ECM after my last work and will now do that again! Could the ECM affect driveability and have an effect on the aforementioned electrical problems?

the problem with the light and chime is the stupid switch in the door that is notoriuse for going out. spray some wd-40 on it should fix the problem.
Littleme13: For the life of me I can't see or find the switch?
its inside the door not a normal push button like you see in most cars. if i remeber corectly there is a metal peice that hooks to the door and cab and this actuates the switch inside the door.
No I didn't get a ce light? What has happened is the truck has begun to idle rough and stall "without" getting any ce light hence no codes?
I'll stick w/ my 1st diagnisis: air is entering the intake plenum through a leaky gasket; a bolt that has loosened or vacuum leak; a hose is partally connected or cracked....it's frustrating, I know, I just spent 8 days ironing out my Rangers problem codes & it still won't pass the EEC-IV 3-point testing effectively.
(Whatever is causing this engines' stumbling it seems to be getting worse). OK! Maybe you can do this: Go around & check for intake or vac leaks w/ the engine running enough to use a fine mist spray bottle w/ water and go around the induction system (Don't soak the system) and see if there is a different pitch in the engine.
See your having fun. What code are coming up. I own a 4.0 my self and in the past I have had idle problems What have you been doing, One thing DON't run it with the pipe disconected between the intake manifold and massair sensor or you burn out the massair sensor. That will cause rough idle. Also if the tempeture sensor is not working with in it parameter it causes rough idle. And you can check and see if the fuel pressure releif value is leaking fuel into the vacum line. These are somethings to look at, If you are looking for some other things to check with Just give me a buss at AJ46
Tomorrow I will go over all the intake and vacuum hoses again! (Third time) I guess the door ajar light is intermittent? After reconnecting neg. battery terminal it hasn't come back on unexpectedly? Thanks for the interest! I appreciate the ideas.

The door ajar light is an easy fix.Spray the lach in the door with WD40.Open and close the door 2 or 3 times, spray again.
If you are like me most of the vacuum lines are they ones that came on your truck if so go ahead and replace them.{Note to self replace vacuum hoses on Ranger }Two things to try .That worked on my 96 4.0 Ranger, one cleaner the MAF senor.Get a can of MAF cleaner at the parts store, follow the directions on can.Two clean the TB {Throttle Body}.Again get a can of TB cleaner from parts store follow the directions on can.
Sometime you don't get a code on a dirty MAF senor but it will cause an idle problem,You will not get a code for a dirty TB.
GOOD LUCK!!
