What to do?????

Well took my 04 in for oil change and diagnose a small oil drip. Dealership indicated that it was the bed plate and that the engine would have to be pulled. Problem is that I am departing for Destin later this week and need the truck as my tow vehicle for camper. Dealer indicated that if I experience a engine failure that the warranty would be voided since I operaterated the truck with a defect however, they also informed me that they were concerned that if I had the problem fixed in time to use the truck that they were concerned for me possibly being stranded due to the extensive repairs assoicated with the engine removal. We agreed that I can use the truck but keep an eye on the oil level. Does anyone have any thoughts on operating the truck with the leaking bed plate??? THe leak seems un-noticed as far as consumption goes but would hate if the motor cratered and I would be stuck with the full amount instead of my warranty deductible of $100. Thoughts. I plan to just drive it.......

If you know there is a deficiency, fix it or you'll be sorry later. Lost time or catastrophic loss of power plant plus time?

Ok. So can anyone specifically enlighten me as to the what are the risks if I continue to drive the vehicle with the leaking bed plate so as long as the engine has sufficient oil??
Thanks.

Armymark,
That is a given as I had previously stated/ indicated. Now try and come up with something technical or let someone else reply.

If I was in your situation I would just check your oil level when you stop for fuel etc. Mine has been leaking oil since the day I bought it. I choose to let mine leak rather then having it fixed and possibly creating other problems. With mine, I never need to add oil between changes, just clean up the occasional drips from the garage floor. Just go ahead and enjoy your trip.

The only problem that could happen with the leak is running low on oil. Like Powerstroke07 said, keep an eye on it and have fun.

The last thing you want to do is let them tear into your truck that far right before an extended trip. Not for something as benign as a small oil leak. The dealership is trying to scare you into letting them do the work right now - or maybe just covering their butts. Unless you run it out of oil, and they can prove it, your warranty should remain intact.

Enjoy your trip, although I have no idea where "Destin" would be. But it involves a camper so I'll bet it's a wonderment.

what the hell kind of dealer is this. the truck will stop running before the oil level goes into a critical mode. the truck will shut off at 6 to 8 qts of oil which is still plenty to lube the base engine parts. also, if they are not confident of their repairs, i wouldnt even let them look at my rides even if i needed them to. find a new dealer one that is more capable of repairs and customer service.

Thanks for all the replies. As indicated I am going to drive it!!!! When I think back it has been leaking for a long time probably even before I had the Head Gaskets replaced at 53K. It now has 80K on it. The leak has always been very very small to only wet the bellhousing and an occasional drop on the ground. I do appreciate the dealer indicating that they would prefer not to do the repair and me leave the same day pulling a heavy load from GA to FL incase something were to happen with a truck full of family. I may not even have it fixed unless a Ford Diesel Tech or other qualified tech on this forum can tell me the pros of why it needs to be repaired given the small amount of oil that I am noticing. Thanks again to all for the piece of mind so far.

With that minor of a leak you should have no problem at all, as said before, just check oil when re-fueling. Incidentally, my dealership repaired my bedplate leak without pulling the motor or lifting the cab. Been 3 months now and leak has not returned. Knock on wood!
