On the way into work this morning my steering linkage let loose and lost the adjusting sleeve to the outer LH tie rod. That's an unnerving feeling losing steering at 50mph.
How many miles on the truck, and have you had this stuff looked at before? My truck is currently at the dealership, and one of the things I asked them to do was look at the front end since it's a little loose. I dropped it off on Monday after work, and I haven't gotten a call yet. They were supposed to call me before they started doing any work on items that I asked them to look at but didn't authorize repairs on, but I have a feeling they're just fixing everything and will then stick me with a big bill for me to yell at them about doing unauthorized repairs.
The main tie rod, one that's 4 feet long threads onto the outer LH tie rod must have had a loose collar cause the threads on the bar where non existant. It hit a bump and pulled out of the collar or wrapper, which ever you want to call her. I dropped it off to have it all replaced. $300 in parts, $95 for labor and another $65 for an alignment and she's done. I had them replace the steering damper too while they were down there.
If so...this may be the time to install the adjustable camber/caster shims and have him adjust both to the high side (positive) of the spec range while he's already doing the alignment...just a thought.
I know on mine...I've been very happy since I had this done.
