Question New to the 400 & have some questions

I have a '77 F250 2wd/C6. The original 400 is pretty tired, so I have a connection to get a good quality reman through my job. I plan on adding a cam/intake/carb/headers to the reman to give it a little edge. I'm not looking to drag race with the thing, but a nice little noticable lope on idle would be good. What do I need to look out for when shopping for an intake? I have heard that these motors have EGR/smog stuff built into the heads. I would like to eliminate the EGR stuff as I have no emission testing where I live. What do i need to watch out for when installing a 4 barrel intake? And also, what would be a good cam for this project? I'm used to messing with the 300 six, so this is all new to me.

Thanks for the info!

Any of the aluminum single plain 4V non egr manifolds available would be ok. IMO there aren't any junk ones out there. A little grinding in the heads ports will help too. Just blending the bowls, I & E and removing the smog bumps in the exhaust ports will help some. What ever cam you choose, you should check lifter preload, you may need to shim or use a different length push rod.

I think it will be really worth your while upgrading the pistons on that reman... Once again, look to TMI for those pistons. The formula works well with these pistons on 2V heads.
My jury is out on single plane or dual plane intakes though... For a car, dual plane for sure. Ask more people, but tell what you are needing for power and streetability.

i personally would go with a edelbrock set up, 4 brrl carb, performer intake, and either a crane cam or edelbrock performer cam, with a set of headers of ur choice

Its always better to get a goo bottom end on your rebuild first rather than intake carb and other stufff, so I recomend high cr pistons and other goodies, check TMeyer inc likje mustang 81 said...
