can water/methanol injection be used in our trucks? is it worth it? i have a 96 5.8. could i use methanol injection and then advance base timing to like 17 and have some results? ive been reading about this but most of it talks about turbocharged engines. aside from increasing octane it gives you dramatically cooler air and combustion temps.
Yes, you can use it in your engine. Don't expect to see any improvement in power though. It does help with mileage and just about completely eliminates carbon build-up. There are a couple kits out there you can buy for a N/A(naturally aspirated) engine. You can also search and find a few instructions on home-made kits. Here is a detailed one I like and will hopefully build and use myself one day Water Alcohol Injection, injector driver, peak and hold, PWM _ MYO-P _ HOME
If you look at the dyno charts on his site, he lost no power and used 9% less fuel. Now I'm sure you could play with the adjustments more and get a little more than that. So, if you got 15mpg now, you could get over 16 afterwards. You'll also benefit from a cleaner engine. Its not a big gain for the cost and time involved, but is a neat project.
BTW, the dyno runs that guy did were only WOT results. It may be an even better fuel efficiency improvement at lower throttle. I've read other ppl claiming 20% on their home made systems that shot a mist in the throttle body.
The power gains would just barely, if at all, be noticeable with your stock engine. Your truck has a 5.8. All 351w are SD so there is no MAF sensor(with the exception of a handful of California emissions trucks... a very small handful).
Is your truck 4wd or have big tires or something? I've got a '95 250 that gets 14mpg right now in the winter with another 400lbs in the back. It'll probably do a little over 15mpg once it warms up outside. Its bone stock except no cats, no emissions, and I bumped the timing to 13 degrees.
mine is 4x4 has stock tires, 3 inch "high flow" cat and flowmaster. i guess it depends on what kind of driving you do, "city" driving around town, i get about 10.5-11.5 mpg. 15-16 on the highway doing under 65, thats winter fuel so i guess it will go up a bit in summer. but i'd say for city driving year-round the average would be about 11 for me.
