Are the engine to bellhousing plates really needed? I cannot find a new one anywhere except for a $50 piece from Summit, so I could imagine what one would be from the dealership. I really need to know so any help would be appreciated.

Yes, it's required, what are you working on? What year, model, engine size?
A dealer might be cheaper.
FTE has THREE Ford dealer parts department sponsors that give members discounts off the ACTUAL Ford suggested retail prices.
Its a 1993 302 with a C6 going behind it. I tried the parts stores around here, and nobody can even find it in their catalogues. Guess that I'll check with Ford Parts and see what they have. Does anyone happen to know the part number, people aren't too helpful around here.

The number prolly isn't in the catalogs for one of two reasons.
1) It may be a dealer part only.
2) Did 1993 F150's with 302's come with a C6, or not? I can't recall.
1991 = E9TZ-7007-A .. Engine Plate-302 C6. Is this the same as 1993? Dunno, no parts catalogs yet. > > (EDIT: E9TZ-7007-A has been replaced by a new number, what it is, I dunno)
> > I have parts catalogs on the way for 1992 and newer vehicles, but they aren't here yet, so I can't give you the part number and the price.
I suggest you contact Ed Olson at ftepartsguy.com (PARR FORD - Bremerton WA)
Thats the fun part, there is no Ford vehicle involved. Its a 302 from a 1993 T-Bird and a C6 from a 69 Cougar, and they are going into a 1988 Mazda B2200.
I just got done talking with a guy that rebuilt his 302 in his T-Bird, and he didn't have that plate and said everything lined up perfectly.

New parts catalogs (lots of them) just arrived...
1993 F150 / 302 / C6
F4TZ-7007-A .. Engine Plate
Ford suggested retail price: $40.72 / ftepartsguy.com price: $28.92
you will be ok without it as long as the converter has some play in it...if you mate the two and the converter has no play in it then your in trouble... also the starter will have to be checked...
any 302 351W or 300/6 with a c6 will work don't matter what year...
It seems to me the plate is necessary to cover the bottom front of the transmission to keep rain splatter, dirt, rocks etc. out of the bellhousing of the transmission. I think it's a two piece unit; one removes the bottom piece to access the torque convertor to flex plate nuts.
Some are two-piece, and some are one-piece. It's also used to space the starter out from the ring gear. This can be done with a Ford Starter Shim available at any parts store.
If you do come across one, make sure it's the right size for your flywheel. There were two common flywheel sizes, 157 and 164 tooth, and the block plate must correspond with that size. It'll match up to the bell on the tranny if it's the correct one, so that's the simplest way to tell.
Here are the two side by side:
And overlaid so you can see the difference:
Just don't get one from a Mustang II, they used a smaller 148-tooth flywheel and the block plate and bellhousing to match...
I just bought the one from summit...It seems to fit fine...looks good.. not that looks really matter on that part. It is supposed to fit both types. it has lines to cut out for the size you need. If only I could find a dust cover...im going to be hitting up the junk yards for that one. my engine is a 86 5.0..mated to a c6 early model.
