Was wondering if any one knew what you have to do to a 302 to for longer rods. I have seen 2 different types of rods longer than the 5.090 stock length. There is the 5.400 used in 347 strokers, a 5.155 length and the there is the longer 289 rod. Has anyone done this. I am looking for running 9.5 to 10. compression in a 58cc combustion chamber with hypertectic pistons. Thanks for any help.
Try kb-silvolite.com. They have a good selection of pistons and have very good info concerning rod length, compression height, and compression ratio. Look under the Keith Black automotive section. The 289 rod is 5.155. The 5.155 rod was also used in the Boss 302 but it was a little beefier I think and had 3/8" rod bolts instead of 5/16".
289 rod is indeed is 5.155", the stock (non-Boss) 302 rod is 5.09" and shares small rod bolt size with the 289 rods. The 289HP/Boss 302 rod is 5.155" and has 3/8" rod bolts. Using 5.155" rods in a 302 requires Chevy 350V8 compression ht. (approx 1.54") pistons. Using longer aftermarket 5.4" rods requires a 1.30"/1.31" compression ht. piston. For a really long-rod setup, turn the rod journals to 2.10" and narrow the big ends of a set of Chevy 5.565" 400V8 rods with a set of 1.13/1.14" compression ht. pistons. The Ford piston pin diameter is .912" and the Chevy's is .927".
