solid front axle to replace my TIB

hey guys, how we all doin today?? flippin thru some of ur threads and figured u guys would be the ones to answer this one for me. i've got me an 81 f150 and she's got a 9" rear, but it's got the TIB front end. i want to drop that front out of there and replace it w/ a solid axle. i was told that axles out of 70's trucks and broncos will work, but how much of a pain is it to do the swap?

also, i want to run 35" tires on her someday w/ about a 4"-6" lift. wat gear set would u guys recommend for that? i've got straight up 3:1 in it now and it's wayyy too tall for wat i want...i was thinkin 3.73's but other ppl have been suggesting 4.10's...i'm not sure i want anything that deep, but just wanna know wat u guys think...

A D44 or D60 can be swapped in, and following others instructions would be hard. This is a common swap, and you heard right. Late 70s Ford front axles, either D44s or D60s are popular and easier to swap in than other axles.

For 35" tires depending on several factors.....engine, tranny, type of wheeling, any hwy use, towing, etc.... I'd say 4.10-4.56s.
3.73s are to tall for 35s.

she's mainly gonna be a farm truck and she'll see a little bit of the highway too. i'm not really planning on rock crawling or anything like that but i may do some towing w/ her...btw, she's an 81 F-150, 300 I-6 w/ a T-18 4spd, i'm planning on beefing up the 300 so if any of that helps...o yea, there's pics of her in my gallery too, thanks!

I don't think there's too much tech for doing it on FTE, but the solid axle swap section on fullsizebronco.com will have all the info you need to it.

I'd say 4.56s and it just so happens I have a set for sale for a d44 (seriously though, 4.10-4.56 would work well for 35s)

Oh and just for future reference its actually called a TTB (check out the sticky for a hilarious definition of it posted by STG!)

I did the swap seven years ago on my '94 F150 (since sold) using mostly stock '79-'94 parts. I used 4" coils and cleared 36" TSLs no problem. I posted my complete parts list in this forum, just use the search. I've seen about 20-25 TTB to solid axle swaps, and no 2 were exactly the same. Some swap pics in my gallery

wat do u think is a was of money? deeper gears or lift? I can justify the gears b/c if i ever want to tow w/ it, it's not gonna lug my engine near as hard and if i put the bigger tires on, it's gonna be harder on higher gears than lower, wear wise anyway. and the lift is easy, some of the things u gotta drive thru, especailly in NE on a feedlot, let me just say that it's nice to be able to go thru a little more when the cows get out, those freaking holstiens can run pretty fast and getting ur truck stuck in the process just adds to the frustration.
