Email PST file and a Network

Background info is this on my home network:
Cable modem w/ router
Dell Desktop PC - running XP right now
Dell Laptop - running Vista right now
Normal Sharing and Network set up
The desktop is my main PC and the laptop is my wife's, but occasionally, I use the laptop for things. I have been trying to put my Outlook PST file in a shared folder where I can access it from both the desktop and the laptop if on it, but the laptop will not accept the PST file. It will read/access any other file I share, just not the PST. What can I do to make this work? Is the conflict between XP and Vista?
Also, is there a cheaper program out there than MS Exchange to make it where I can access the PST like Exchange does?

You may be able to have the 2 syncronize, but not sure how..
But why not set them up to leave a copy of the mail on the server..
This is usually how I set them up.. The mail will end up on each machine when you long in.
To set it up just goto accounts and it is on the advanced tab..
I usually set it up to remove it from the server after 5 days, but you can keep it longer... If you don't set it to automatically remove then the mailbox will fill up..

I would like to do Exchange so I could access it from any net connection, but at $699 for the software, I can walk downstairs to the desktop...
Outlook can be set to automatically sync with them.. Then you can go to the other pc and reverse the process...
Another thing you could try is copy the pst file to the other pc and place it into the outlook directory overwriting the existing one.. MAKE A COPY first..
I hear you there... I don't go upstairs until it is time for bed..
There is no way that I know of that you can use the same PST file on 2 computers at the same time.
