I think the F150 badge has been around since before 83 but I could be wrong. I thought for a few years you could get F100 and F150. I just found this. Wikipedia says that 1977 was the first year of the F150 name. So, if your 76 is an F150 then it was probably the beginning of the 77 year model.
the f150 was made to circumvent the unleaded gas law which came into effect in 1975 the up the gvw rating of the f100 call it a f150 and you could put regular leaded gas in it. this lasted until 1978 when all vehicles with a gvw rating less than 8500 pounds had to run unleaded . According to the book "Ford f-100/150 pickup" 75 was the first year for the f150.
So if the F150 intro allowed the use of leaded gas til 78, why was the F100 still around all the way til 83?
The 1980/83 F100's may look the same as like F150's, but looks can be deceiving.
Ford advertised the 1980/83 F100's as a Light Truck.
These F100's have "Swiss Cheese" frames, 4.50" bolt patterned wheels (the only F100's to have this pattern), 10" rear brakes, smaller front brakes, different springs, shocks and suspension, different front end suspension bits.
There were no 4WD's available, the standard engine was the 300-I-6, the V8 was the 302, later the *^$#@ 3.8L V6 and the gutless 255 V8 were used.
Very little in the way of accessories were offered, there were no Super Cabs available.
The Ranger was introduced in the spring of 1982 as a 1983 model.
Replaced by the new Ranger, midway thru the 1983 model run, the F100 was dropped from the line.
