Installed new nss. Got adjusted so it will start in neutral, but will not start in park and the back-up lights don't work.
The old nss allowed it to start no matter which gear it was in and the back-up lights did not work.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
It was not in park when I installed because the notches would not line up with it in park. This is a nos nss, is it possible that it is faulty? Is there any way to determine if it is faulty?
Wiggling shift lever makes no difference. I have held the key in the start position and slowly moved shift lever from top to bottom and it will only start in neutral.
appreciate the info.
Obtuse, so what position was it in when you installed it ?
To install the NSS properly the gearshift and transmission must be placed in neutral manually with linkage loosened before the NSS is twisted while using drill bit through switch to set it in the proper position
You have loosen those two mounting bolts so the switch can rotate to align the holes up.
chock the wheels
Place gearshift in Neutral
crawl under truck
Loosen shifter connection to lever
manually place Trans in neutral
Loosen NSS mounting bolts
Rotate switch until drill bit can slide all the way thru switch
Tighten all linkage parts and NSS mounting bolts you loosened.
Dennis,
That is the exact procedure I used once the switch was installed. When first installed it would not start in neutral or park. I did the adjustment procedure just as you described and now it will start in neutral but not park.
I really appreciate all the input from everybody so far.
No play in the linkage. This weekend I actually took the switch loose from the transmission. With my fingers I put the switch in the neutral position and it started. With my fingers I moved the switch to the park position, no start. I played with it in this manner for a while with no luck.
Unless someone has another suggestion I plan to pick up an aftermarket at the local parts house.
Once again, I appreciate all the input from all.
