I am looking for a break controller for my truck. I will be making a few trips up to vermont and maine with the horse trailer and i see these trips to be a reason to get a controller. What is a good controller to get? can i install it myself? how much is this going to cost?
Best controller I got for my 97 F150 was the Prodigy. Great price and very simple to install. Got mine off of etrailer a year ago along with the harness to plug into the truck under the dash. After shipping and everything I paid $120 for my Prodigy.
I've had it over a year and its great. Super easy to use and looks very nice too boot. Has more features than the Prodigy. The thing I like best about the P3 over the Prodigy is I can adjust the ouput while on the brakes and see the value. On the Prodigy you can adjust it while on the brakes but you can't see the value on the screen while on the brakes. I pull different trailers so I have to adjust often.
Get the pre-made harness for the controller and just plug it in behind the the dash mount the controller and your done, no splicing or electrical connections.
I too have the P3 and am very impressed. Don't have much experience with anything other than an old POS controller I had, and anything would be better than that.
hey i am looking to buy the harness and there are two different ones for my truck....on is for my truck with the tow package and one is for my truck without the tow package. How do I tell if my truck has the tow package?
just make sure whatever you buy can control the number of axles under you trailer.
i know...the guy i bought my truck from told me it had some different options that i later found out it didnt(but thats a different story).......he told me it has the tow package but i just want to make sure before i order parts.....and i have hauled this trailer before but i never had a brake controller cause for work i only haul boat trailers which have the hydrolic brakes built into the trailer
I also recommend the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller. I purchased mine last year...and have had no issues with it. Very easy to adjust...and I really like the volt or battery meter. Lets me know how my SD is charging the battery while I cruise down the road.
i am finally gonna purchase one any was looking under the dash for the hookup and didn't find one. there is a spot where 5 wires come out and are not connected to anything. Could this be for the hookup? i will try to get some pictures.

I just plugged mine in a week ago, so I can tell you where it was on my '00 Excursion:
Pull the panel-cover under the steering-wheel for the fuses (it's actually that huge piece). There is a metal dash support bracket to the right of the opening. On the OTHER side of that bracket with sharp edges is a gray 6-pin connector: that is the factory brake-controller connector. It is a REAL pain to plug the harness into it, as there is very little access. I finally got it in, and routed the harness down to peek out from under the edge of the lower dash-panel, and screwed in the quick-release bracket for my P3 into that recessed area in the lower dash-panel.
