I replaced all my plugs and boots on a 1998 Ford E-250 5.4 engine. My new boots from Auto Zone do not seal tight at the top of the spark plug well. Is this normal?
I had discarded the original ones days before but I remember them fitting tight and not allowing the COP to rotate. I am now getting a misfire on #6 cylinder when it is raining or very damp. I used dielectric grease at the coil and plug end of the boots. Should I have gotten the boots from Ford for a tight fit? Thanks for any help or advice.
I've never heard of any problems with the aftermarket boots. I would remove it and regrease it real good to see if that cures the problem.
You might also pull that plug and make sure that the porcelin isn't cracked.
I know that you can rotate the COP about 20 degrees right or left with the new boots. Auto Zone said they are the correct ones. I think they would let in water in a hard rain.
i had the exact problem on my 99 5.4-could not get the dang things to seal and misfires on 2 and 5. i ended up getting factory boots on the motor 2 weeks later.
fixed the problem.
aftermarket parts from china!
factory parts from canada.
