I've been posting a lot of threads lately, but everyone here always has a quick answer for me.
I have the sliding window in my truck, can I convert it to a solid window without modding anything? Could I just get safelight to come out and install the solid rear window?
Whe the hell would you want to do that? I think these trucks look incomplete without the slider. That is why I swapped one in years ago. However, I like the single slider with 3 panes of glass better than the double slider with four panes of glass.
Replaceing it shouldn't be a problem. If it is an aftermarket like CRLawrence then the gasket is the same, but if it is an OEM slider the gasket is different.
If you lived in central texas, I could give you a solid rear window glass. I have 2 of them.
I agree about the tint. Its gotta have it especially if it is a regular cab. I would check and see what the local shops in your area want for the rear glass. I could ship you one, but I think it would be about at least 40 bucks since it is large and is probably considered oversize. A new rear window shouldn't be very much. I think LMC and NPD have them too. They are about 50 bucks from LMC. Why do you want to get rid of the slider? Is it broken?
The slider works great, I just like the look of the solid window. Just cleaner to me. This thing also has hellacious water spots on it that will not come off for anything.
Thats the case with mine too. It sounds like yours is worse, but mine has water spots that wont come off either. Does anyone know how to get them off. I think it is from going to the drive through laser wash and the do it yourself car washes that don't have good spot free rinse. Since the back window is flat air doesn't blow the water off when you drive. Thats just my thought. I found a do it yourself car wash here that has Mon-Fri a half hour spray time for 4 bucks, and the spot free rinse uses a filter like hospitals use. Needless to say that when I wash my truck there, I get virtually no spots, not even on my polished aluminum wheels. Sorry to hijack the thread but I thought it was relavent. Anyway, there has to be some way to make the back glass look better.
Sprayway glass cleaner and 0000 steel wool. REAL steel wool NOT that synthetic crap, 0000, not 000! Spray on the Sprayway, rub in circles until dry, (rub, not grind) with the steel wool, repeat until the spots are gone, you'll know..clean with lint free whatever you got and the Sprayway..that simple..Whole back window will take less than a half hour. Be careful around the rubber seals.
Almost every grocery store, Wally World, Target, parts houses, and bigger gas stations have it here. It's just MY favorite...Probably almost any glass cleaner will work, though the Sprayway seems to work better and faster (and cheaper) for this....
I work it in about 6" to 8" circles.....you'll see the difference when/as the spots come off.. I should take pictures of my windows.. Did the passenger side, but not the drivers yet. (previous owner had sprinklers, always hit that side, I guess...) and it workes great..Old guy taught me this one back in the 80s..His windows were always spotless. I use the steel wool on them when I wash in the summer every 3rd or 4th wash, too...keeps them nice..then just re-do the RainX if you wish..or some guys I know just use wax on them..but I think the RainX is better....doesn't build up dust as fast/much.
Thats interesting to use them both together at the same time. I have used 0000 steel wool by itself before with decent results. Actually I had good results getting paint overspray off with 0000. I have used Stoner's Invisible Glass I think is what is called. It works pretty good. Is the Perfect Glass or Sprayway better? I never thought to use them simultaneously.
It seems to work faster and shine them up better with the foamy window cleaner. I figure it's becuase of added lubrication, and it helps keep the steel wool cleaner longer..I have some of that Invisible glass. Guy I bought my house from left it in the garage. It looked just like the bug spray it was sitting next to, so I didn't even touch it for a year..when I figured it out, I started using it on the inside of the windshield and windows...it's pretty good stuff..but I like the foam Sprayway for the waterspots..it just seems to work better.
