Problems with ignition
I have a Mountaineer 02 which I bough used. Since I first got the truck I have been experiencing problems with pushing the key in the ignition. I have to play with it a few times, pushing it in, turning it around and pushing in before the ignition accepts the key. I have the problem with both keys. Any clue what might be causing this?

I had the same problem with my 02 mountaineer, which I also bought used. I used a thin lubricant (wd-40 classs), and it didn't seem to help at first, but gradually got better, and after several years, is still working great.

Does the Ford key have a chip in it that unlocks the key chamber mechanism because sometimes the key slips right in without having to fight it. It doesnt seem like a lubrication issue or I would have to fight it constantly. Sorry I should of mention this earlier.

The transponder only works the electronics, not the mechanics. You can have a new key cut which will turn on the switch easily, but nothing happens when you do.
As I said before, I had the same experience. Sometimes the key would go right in, sometimes it was a bear. But some time after lubricating it, it started to work correctly all the time.
