rear diff gearing

Hey I was wondering what would be a good gear ratio to swap to right now. I have a 3.31 rear end with a aode/w transmission and a 5.0 in a 1995 f150 supercab. I do 90% city driving and 10% highway. I just seems a little sluggish to me. Runs ok but it does have 193000 miles. Only mods are aftermarket muffler and a two core radiator to date. Money alittle scarce these days. Any input would be appreciated.

If its really sluggish are you sure you don't have 3.08. Thats what mine came with and they suck. Thats why I swapped in the traction lock 3.55 rear end. I kind of wish that I could have found a rear end with 3.73.

I have 3.55 in my truck and it gets about 16 mpg city and highway, and thats with over 250,000 on the clock. I think that 3.73 is the best choice for overall performace. To really wake it up 4.10 would be the most fun to drive, but not for mpg. The 302 doesn't make much low end power and needs to rev up in order to make it. I would go with 3.55 or 3.73. I don't really know which of these 2 is better for mpg.

Are you running stock size tires 235 75 15? Thats the best tire size for economy. If you have oversized tires it will eat up the gas. I have 255 70 15 that are nearly the same size just a little wider. If you have really wide tires that will hurt economy too.

The best thing you can do is keep it tuned up and all the fluids and filters clean.

3.55 to 3.73 are what you want if your tires are stock or 1 size bigger, once you get into 32" and bigger rubber go straight to 4.10.
