Ok so im new here, so ill introduce myself, Names wade and live in south dakota on a ranch and my family owns an amber crew cab long box (Boat) 00 f250 powerstoke. I do have a moderate understanding of most mechanical things, I have done enough work to my Trans Am, but i am new to most of the workings of the powerstroke.
My dad is looking into thing to do for a bit more power but MPG for sure, due to high fuel prices, so far we are looking at some kind of chip and probably a Intake filter or kit. As of now everythign is stock, but with a chip i think some guages may be in order also. Thanks to any who contribute.

Welcome to FTE....
Get the Guages first. Other's will chip in with their thoughts...
after that you need to open up the air intake, and the exhaust, then you will be able to take full advantage of the tuner.
As far as tuners, may I be the first(but certainly not the last) to recommend DP-tuner. It is custom tuning for your truck, 100% better than bullydog/superchips/edge/quadzilla/banks,etc...
The customer service from DP is second to none, and the programs are tailored to how you want to drive the truck.

Not all that familiar with the diesel lingo, EGT? What is recomended for exhaust, I have heard of some going straight piped is that common?
-Ill be (i think the second) to suggest the DP tuner...best bang for the buck.
-Cheapest intake you can get is NAPA 6637 or WIX 46637 filter...
-I just bought a new exhaust on ebay 5" aluminized MBRP for 490 something delivered to the door, that would help keep ur EGT down while towing and would sound really good anytime.
-Also best way help your MPG is to not romp on the pedal all the time...take it from me it gets expensive after a while. try to keep the RPMs under 2k during excelleration and don't go above 68/69 mph on the highway.
-There's plenty more to do...i'll let others chime in.
I have not had the best of luck with the law before i got my truck so you should check to see if it is legal...I just bought the 5" one mentioned above with a muffler because in NJ its illegal to buy the truck with a muffler then take it off, even if you redue the whole system...some get away with it, i don't want to be screwed because of it.
So its looking like 3 Guages, EGT, Boost and Trans Temp, Dp tuners, and a Filter. I see someone mentioned something about getting an Air Raid filter to fit or something, We are looking for a reusable one btw, K&N style, but not them i ran into problems with my Trans am and a K&N....

EGT= exhaust gas temps..with a chip you can run hot enough to melt pistons..most guy's here run 4" exhaust..some like me run 5"..no diffs other then sound...a lot of us run strait pipe for a better sound...just deleteing your muffler on a stock system will make a diff in power as well..but its better to go with a 4"..
