I run a 2000 EX V 10 4X4 w/ 60k miles. I only drive it obout 5K a year now. Garaged from day 1. I was wondering when and if I should have my tranny flushed ? I tow my boat around 5 miles to the lake in the summer. It weighs around 4K #'s.
Yes you should. It should be done every 30k miles.
The dealership should do the flush right? I can use Mercon V for the transmission right, because didn't Ford stop using Mercon and now Mercon V is compatible with it.
The thing that worries me is I have changed tranny fluid in the vehicles before, not a flush and once I changed the fluid and filter started having issues. Any others changed there fluid with a flush ?
Not an expert but my experience is if you check the fluid and it is still a nice red color then go ahead and change it if miles warrant a change and you are doing it a favor. If it looks otherwise just leave it alone because tranny problems will be coming sooner if you change it than otherwise but they are coming either way........
You can change it yourself with no problem. Tech folder has step by step but it's a little messy and you don't drive it too much according to you post. So if $150 every few years isn't a big deal to you then let the dealer do it and know it is done right and forget about it.

I had that happen to me before. Why? Because the tech took out the filter BUT LEFT THE RUBBER O-RING THERE. Then he inserted a new filter WITH AN O-RING. Later on, the filter fell out. Gee, I wonder why.
Other than that, I never had a problem changing filters and dumping old fluid. Those are old wives tales.
Hell, I even had it done at BTS. Dropped pan, overfilled trans, dump out 4 quarts out of the lines, overfilled again, dumped another 4 quarts then level checked. If it would have caused a problem, why would Brian do it there at his shop?
the fluid replacement issue has come up before..All i hear scares me, so just as always i drain and replaced the fluid, and replace the filter. I don't trust the fluid replacement. I've never had a transmission related problem on any of my vehicles.
MERCON V has replaced MERCON for all applications that used to use MERCON. MERCON V has been changed to be compatible with the transmissions that used to use MERCON.
