Its not just Walmart and Princess Auto - we live in a disposable world!
Lets use any appliances for example. Mom and Dad had the same kitchen applainces for what seemed like an eternity - the ones they got to replace those big, heavy originals are now being replaced. It seems like there is not much that makes economic sense to fix!

doing a kitchen/main floor remodle for a well to do family... 2 year old windows they were going to throw out... i have them for my remodle this summer... they were going to throw out light fixtures that are perfect for my shop, some of them are awesome for a rec room... working microwave/range hood combo, fridge, wall oven, cooktop... all good stuff thrown away... there needs to be more pawn shops or something.

I know, we spent over $200 to fix our fridge and had to give up as it never got fixed properly. The sad part is the new is a piece of junk that won`t last 10 years, never mind the 20 + the old one did. Parts and labour add up, in some cases, to more than a new but very inferior appliance....
I doubt we`ll see a TV or what ever last like the older models.

2 things.......
I have to do repairs to my wife's washing machine, i was told it would be better to repair it and get another 10 years (16 yrs already) since most new ones have a much shorter life expectancy. The newer ones are more effiecient but i will repair the older one.
2nd i was Kelowna last week for training at Kelowna Flight Craft. There was a pilot waiting there to fly ONE injured skiier back to England. 25 passenger jet, the "injured" skiier came off the helicopter, walked over to the jet and away they went. The pilot said he was coming back next week to get the rest of the skiing party.
WHAT KIND OF CARBON FOOTPRINT DOES THAT LEAVE ?!

Best I can figure on appliances is to find out what they install in apartment complexes.

Either that or go totally top of the line food service grade (for kitchen stuff anyhow).

My womans dad owns and operates an appliance repair shop. I asked him one time about the appliances of these days. Its only partially true that the old appliances last longer. Now a days you have to pay a whole lot more for the good quality then back in the day. Back in the day there werent half as many choices. Hell now a days you can spend 400 bucks on a fridge, or 4 grand. You bet your *** the 4 grand fridge is gonna last alot longer then the 400 dollar one, and the old school one, but who wants to shell out that kind of coin?

I personally choose to live the disposable kinda life. I wouldnt be able to afford to buy top quality everything, that adds up. I shop at walmart, canadian tire and Princess auto strictly for pricing.

I do also think every little bit helps. If even half of the people in sask turned of their lights the other night, it makes a little difference.

Its just your own personal choice if ya wanna do that little part or not!

Its funny you say that too, my father thinks the same way about computers lol. He doesnt watch much tv, but he told me once he would never bother to get the news on the computer, even if he could!

Ever since I bought him a computer he does mess around on it a little bit now though.

Just outta curiosity, do you not have a television in your house?!

That 4 grand fudge maybe a computerized nightmare. One of our neighbors had a 2 + grand computerized stove that never ever really worked right....
I like shopping at Walmart, Canadian tire and Princess auto too but also realize that the $2.95 wire strippers will soon be in the garbage. I try to buy less stuff but of better quality that`ll last and not end up the landfill so fast.
Every little bit by many people can make a big difference, one of these times there won`t be a choice.....I`d rather do my part now.

Thats the other problem with the expensive fridges now a days is the electronics. Some a guy gets are great and the next ones are problems from day one. Alot of people dont take the risk, cause for one, who wants to blow that kinda money to keep food cold, and two, what happens if its electronically challenged, and never works right?

I do buy better quality stuf when needed. Im gonna need a 3/4 ratchet and socket set pretty soon, with some large wrench's and I dont think im gonna cheap out too much on those, since im gonna be needed them to be tough.

Awhile ago I thought why bother doing my part now, its not gonna make a difference. I started looking into things, and researching various things, and now I try to do my part too.

No one can ever tell me I didnt at least try to help abit!

Well we did our small parts and watched the glow of the city lights. PPHHtt big deal. Still had the fridge freezer, furnace, clocks all going. I even shut the computer off.
Yes today stuff is disposeable and does not stand up to quality like the older stuff did. But if they did a lot of the businesses would not last. So now we are a disposaable society.
Also the government penalise us to make improvements to save enegry. They got it wrong. By doing this all they are doing is making lower income people say whats the use. We have no money to make improvments. Now if they helped reward lower income people to improve their homes and lifestyles to conserve the enviroment. They need to reward them, not penalise them.
That is the problem, reward people to conserve and make improvements.
Just like property taxes. You make improvements and you pay more taxes, do nothing and the taxes stay the same or lessen. So where is the incentataive for home improvements there and the enviroment.

Thats a pretty good post Glen. If they gave rewards for improving stuff they would lose a ton of money though, both from the rewards, and the extra taxes and whatnot.

Sherm your one funny duck man! I dont know anyone these days that doesnt have a tv!
With the exception of spring break up, I work an average of 13ish hours a day, and sleep maybe 5 or 6 hours a night. I usually keep the tv on for the weather and news, and the simpsons haha.

Reading the local news on the computer kinda sucks.

To me penalize and tax the ones who do not make improvements. That would make up taxes. It would also make people fix their homes up more to lessen the taxes and get rewarded.
