problems with 302 please help

I am having problems with a 302 out of a 78 lincoln versailles it starts really easy but only runs a couple of seconds before it quickly cuts out you can keep it running with the gas pedal but when you let it go it cuts out again I was told it could be an intake leak so we changed that and we changed the carb gasket we rebuilt carb it is getting plenty of fuel another thing is that it was spewing oil up out of the dipstick but my pcv valve hose wasn't hooked up at the time and was told that could be the problem causing that I was also told it could be a broke compression ring which I hope it is not put the pcv hose on but can't get around there quick enough to see if it is leaking anymore please help me if possible.

Did you strip all the lincoln stuff off the engine. It had a different electronic control system with a computer, and I bet none of the original dist, carb etc. will work without all the wires being hooked up.

Concerning a the oil leak, I would run a compression test on all 8. I have stayed away from buying any engines older that the early 80's due to their age, and almost all of them needing to be torn down for some reason or another. If this engine is dead, look for a 5.0 long block out of an 87-93 mustang(LX 5.0 of GT). The engines are real durable, fairly cheap, and hold up to all kinds of power adders even with lots of miles.
As to the ignition problem, I think you might have the coil power wire hooked up the starter solenoid power feed( or possibly an ignition switch problem). Check with a test light and see if the power goes away to the coil when it dies.

oops, that is supposed to be 5.0 LX "OR" GT, not "of"
The reason for the compressin test being if there is enough blowby, which I suspect there is, it blows oil vapor out of any opening and will build up enough to start causing drips and runs....

It sounds like the lincoln engine was not exactly putting out that much compression.....
Yes, you will have to get a different flexplate. The balance weight is 28 ounces on 302 engines up thru 1981, 50 ounces 82-up. Look thru mustang mags at different performance auto tranny builders. The 50 ounce flexplate for a c4 is not available at your local parts store(that I know of), and is only available aftermarket thru the suppliers mentioned above. You will also need to count the ring gear teeth on your current flexplate and see if it is a 157-tooth setup, because that is all that is the only size available(once again, open for revision). I do not remember the supplier, but it seems like it was Performance Automatic that had it.
If you are doing this swap, I would strongly recommend getting a stall convertor that stalls out around 2200-2400 rpm, as the truck will be a real dog if you use the car convertor(1200 rpm, maybe?). Of course you will need a big tranny cooler, and a good shift kit is in order also.
