coming home the other day, the truck let out a few high speed rattles when i was over 70mph (120kph). i thought the turbo was going to grenade on me. but it came and went. not really with engine load. and at no other time other than above 70 mph. so yesterday i go over the truck with a fine tooth comb. find all kinds of stuff to fix, but nothing broke or not working. lol. today i drove the truck like she was rented and no problem at all.. kinda fun to. i wasn't able to get above 60mph due to the snow coming down.
has any one run into the drive shaft creating an intermittent high speed rattle at fast highway speeds.
my truck has a new shaft (steady) bearing and its tight, but i notice that coming on and off the throttle creates a low clunk or low thud noise at almost any speed, that i think is the shaft. specifically around the slip yoke and u joint areas. just wondering. thanks
I am betting that you need to grease the slip yoke with some of that special blue grease that Ford carries. If you do a search here you should be able to find info on it.
is it around the same speed? ill look for the blue grease, is it a fix for this or should a guy just get new shaft made made up. dont want to spend that $ on that but this kind of thing drives me nuts.
The blue grease is the fix for the clunk that occurs at take off or low speed. That spline gets dry and then the dreaded clunk comes along. I do not know if that is causing all of your trouble but's it's worth a shot to try it and find out.
My recent driveshaft problem was the rear yoke at the spline. Even though I replaced the u-joint, rather had it done, no one noticed that the pocket that the u-joint cup sits in was warn. New yoke and problem solved.
