problems with 67

i have a 67 f-250 with a 460. problems i am having are when it gets to operating temp. it turns over too slowly to start. have replaced battery, cables and numerous electrical parts and still have the problem. also it really loads up sitting at idle. had the 750 holley rebuilt thinking that would fix it but it still does it. any help would be appriciated. rob

The engine turning over slow when it's warm could be a simple timing issue. Or it could be a starter getting tired and dragging. Not much of a carb person, sorry.

Do you have headers on the truck? Headers notoriously "bake" starters....also a starter can get saturated with oil from a leaky valve cover.....either way, when the starter goes bad, it no longer delivers enough torque to start the engine...it can turn it over...but especially when hot, it won't start.

Hi and Welcome to the site!

When you say you replaced the cables, did you also upgrade them to a larger cable? I've found that stock Ford battery cable are notoriously undersized and by upgrading to heavier cables (all of them) I've solved slow cranking problems. A #1 or even 1/0 cable is a vast improvement.

How is the starter itself though? If it's getting weak, then it may crank okay cold but not when hot...

Make sure your timing is not too far advanced as this can cause a slow crank condition when hot. A tired starter will also do this. Replace it with a good quality rebuilt or brand new unit.

the starter is 1 year old but did have headers on it and they layed on it. i have adjusted the timing and thats not it. i did upgrade cables. think unimog005 has something with the baked starter, will swap it. how about the fuming up at idle? its a light colored smoke. and burns the hell out of your eyes.

fuming at idle.

Make sure your secondaries are not sticking partly open as this will cause a rich condition especially at idle. You could be jetted to rich on your main jets. Believe it or not a stock 460 does not require larger than stock jets on a 750 carb. Thats a lot of carb. I have a built 429 in my truck and I am running a 750 holley with standard main jets and it runs great all around.

Your starting issue has been covered. Your loading up issues probably a simple fix. Like Dennis mentioned, your secondaries are open too far to allow for primary idle mixture control. Do they screws on the side do anything? Crank them all the way IN and see if truck dies. It should. I run a stock 750 Holley on my stock 352 and idles perfect. It's still just a 375cfm 2bbl when at idle. There is a set screw on the passenger side of carb that sets the "idle" setting of secondaries. You have to pull carb to adjust this as it's from the bottom. Unscrew that screw to close secondaries fully, then try readjusting primary idle mixture, it should work fine now and get rid of your fouling issue. Sound confusing, but pretty simple once you see it.
