Interior lights and windows problems...

I have a 2000 Excursion with a 7.3 diesel in it. At times, the interior lights, power windows, and rear power vent windows won't work. Sometimes the fuse for the power windows blows too. It seems like when I start the truck up they don't work, and after a few miles of driving, it all seems to work fine (as long as the fuse doesn't blow). I replaced a relay a few months ago because the power door locks were not working, and they have worked fine ever since.

I'm thinking that it could be a short somewhere. I was told that it is common to have a short in the door area where the wires pass through the doors.

Has anyone had this problem with their truck and found a solution?

Thanks for any help.

How about a bit more info.

Like the location of each switch involved in your problem. The rear window switch should be overhead, the interior lights should be on the headlight switch or when you open a door, and are the power windows you refer to those in the doors or thew rear vent windows.

I ask this because it seams you are dealing with 3 completly different circuits and if so I do not see a common point yet.

Just a hunch here - but are they getting stuck? I know mine, on occaision, seem to stick to the seals. I opened them, cleaned around the window seal and applied a thin coating of silcone... now they seem to open with less hesitation.

All interior lights don't work at times. If I open any doors, turn on the manual switch by the headlight switch, or even push the buttons on the actual light itself, they fail to come on. After awhile (if the fuse did not blow) they will just start working again. That's why I am guessing it may be a short somewhere. Not sure where though.

The power window situation seems to be resolved since I replaced the relay under the hood. I just mentioned this in case one could possibly lead to other.

Looks like there are 2 relays and 2 fuses involved here. The battery saver relay and the interior lamp relay.

When the problen next happens try the glove compartment lamp. If it comes on and the interior light will not then it is the interior relay or interior light fuse, F2.35 a 10 amp fuse.

If the glove compartment doesn't come on then it is the battery saver relay or it's fuse, F2.41 a 10 amp fuse.

Both relays are housed in the instrument cluster microprossor up in behind the dash.

This information is from a 2004 manual but I would think they are the same.

Ford does not give interior wiring od the microprossor.

More info. on my problem...

Ok. I checked what you said this morning. This is what IS NOT working:
All interior lights (no matter what what switch I use).
Glove box light.
All power windows (including rear side vent windows).
Both power mirrors.

This IS WORKING:
All door power door locks.

I hope this is better info. to help solve my problem. All worked fine for months, and now all stopped again. I had this problem months ago. I think I replaced a fuse inside the truck and all was fine. All of a sudden, it's doing it again.

The common factor to this is the Battery Saver Relay listed as inside the Instrument Cluster Microprosser or the fuses for the Battery Saver Relay. Look at fuse F2.41 a 10 amp fuse and F2.35. a 10 amp fuse. If they are good then I would look at the Microprosser.

Ford does not show clearly where the prosser is only that the connector for it are directly behind the instruments. Maybe someone else will chime in and advise on how to get to it.

If you can get to the instrument cluster I might be able to tell you which points to test.

If the 10 amp fuses that you speak of are the small push in ones behind the panel by my knees; I had to keep replacing them to get all the stuff to work again. I didn't check, but I'm pretty sure that it is blown again. hat do think is causing it to blow? It's weird how it may not blow for months, or may blow within minutes.

Which fuse is blowing? There should be a circuit number on the fuse block next to the fuse.

If you are blowing fuses you have a short in that system.

Just checked it. Fuse # 14. Manual says: 15 amp. dome lamp, cargo lamp, courtesy lamps, running boards, power mirrors, vanity mirrors, map lamps, underhood lamps, glove box lamp, power windows (delayed accessory).

Not sure what "delayed accessory" means.

I replaced the fuse and all works fine now. It will probablt blow soon though.

Looks like the 2000 wiring is different than the 2004 book I am using.

If it keeps up I may be able to get the 2000 wiring diagram at school and start to brake it down by sub systems.

If you know anything about trailer brakes I'll pick your brain.

I'll give the trailer brake thing a try. I've got a race trailer of my own. What's the problem with it?
