Help!! I have an 85 f150 transmission that is not working after a clutch replacement.
The tranny won't go into third or reverse, and will shift between first and second without clutch pushed in.I have driveshafts out, so I can test the shifting.
I believe that it is stuck in third, but it will shift through gears with engine off. It sat for 6 months.
Any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure what you're describing or concerned about... a manual transmission will generally shift between gears without the clutch pushed in and the engine not running, that's nothing to be concerned about. I'm assuming a 4spd + reverse but it really doesn't matter. Regardless, it won't go into third or reverse, I'm assuming with the engine not running? It kinda sounds to me like maybe you've got the shifter lever misplaced in the transmission (I'm somewhat familiar with a T-18)? Have you tried it with the engine running?
Chris,
Thanks for reply. First , it will shift from first to second with the engine rinning, but clutch not in!! it is not engaging gears, but will move back and forth.
It is an rts, not a t-18 tranny. It was used for a short time .
I aaam trying to figure out shifter is in wrong, but I can't seem to get top off or see into shifter hole to see what is going on.
OIC, thanks for the clarification. I don't know what an rts transmission is but it still sounds to me like a problem with the gear shift installation into the transmission, I can't see how a mere clutch replacement would cause your problem any other way (assuming you didn't do any other work ont he tranny, you merely removed & reinstalled it as a complete unit).
The rts is a 4 speed top loader with turret type shifter on top. RTS stands for rail top shifter. Some think it is the srod unit.
I agree that it is probably the shifter, but I can't seem to get it to work.
Thanks for feedback.
