I looked at a 1980 F150 in a lot that had a 4 sp manual trans. The shift **** had OD in the 4 spot. I thought you have to have a 5 speed to get overdrive?
I am looking for a good gas mileage daily driver, I6, one barrel carb, VAC advance dizzy, higher gears in the rear end. I havent found a list of the axel codes shown the door frame decal anywhere to tell what the rear end is while shopping.
In my city they go back 25 years for emissions tests.
Yeah, they made a 4-speed with OD. There was one without OD (mine), also. If you are looking to get better highway gas mileage, then definitely go with the OD.
All of the 80-86 2WD with I6 and 4speed I've ever seen were generally taller gears, especially with the OD tranny. My first truck had a 2.47 rearend, 100 MPH in 3rd!
One of the trannies they used was related to the old toploader of muscle car fame. On a normal tranny, the 4th speed just locks everything together, and you get 1 to 1 straight through to the driveshaft. They took this old toploader style tranny(I think the OD version is called a RUG) and swapped the shift pattern and the gears for third. So now third is 1 to 1, and 4th gear is really the old 3rd position, and they put gears in there to give a overdrive.
FYI: The OD has about a .70 to 1 ratio. My 83 with a 3.08 rear axle cruises at 60 mph at only 1600 rpm. I'd get 22 mpg (highway) when it was new. After 175,000 miles and 25 years I get only 20 highway. Awwww!
I just swapped that tranny out of my bronc- 85 300-6. Not a very tough tranny-no abuse other than a light trailer. I put the granny low 4 speed in and am much happier. Fuel mileage takes a hit, but I don't worry about my tranny now. If you aren't gonna work it hard or abuse it, it is a great tranny.
