suppose to be picking up a 1984 f350 tommorow. 2wd, 460, auto. i'm interested in converting it to a dually. my question is on 2 points -
1- if i buy dual rear wheels, is it as simple as just swapping them out?
2- the fenders for the bed , will fenders off an 88 stepside f150 work on this 84 f350? or are they different because of where they mount? if anyone has knowledge of this please chime in. thanks - mike
Not absolutely sure, but I think there is a difference in axle lengths between single rear wheels and dually wheels. Also, the dually wheels won't work on your front hubs. Your best bet might be to buy wheel spacer adapters to allow mounting duals on your axle. For example see: http://www.wheeladapter.com/DuallyAdapters.asp .
If you want duals, you will need the correct width axle or you can use adapters. For the front, you can go to the salvage yard and get the front hubs/rotors from a dual wheel truck and they will swap right over onto your spindles. You could just not worry about the front, but then the issue of carrying an extra spare comes into play. I have seen plenty of duallies only running the inside wheels lately, so you could carry a spare for the front, and if you blow a rear, just remove it until you can get it fixed.
Not sure about the fenders, the dually beds are different but I dont see any reason you cant throw some fenders on your existing bed.
the mounting surface on a fleetside bed is contoured, and on the stepside it's flat, so i dont see how it would happen without chopping them up. i knew there would be and issue with putting back wheels on front due to clearence issues from offset, just was not sure if a 1ton single wheel axle and a 1 ton dually axle were different?
point to remember, the conversion kit will be there only for looks. if you want the real benifet of a dually, hit a wrecker and get the whole DRW assembly... just my 2 cents...
I'm just throwing this out for the experts...I'm not positive on this, but doesn't a true dually truck have a narrower rear frame? I've only taken apart one true dually, and it was probably 8 or 9 years ago, but I seem to remember the frame was different.
If you need the capacity of the dually, then just wait and buy one. I don't think it's cost effective to convert one unless you have or can get both trucks real cheap.

Only the factory cab/chassis dually has the different/odd width frame and axle.
For the original poster, my advice is to be patient and wait for a dually for sale to come up. They are not that rare, and you can avoid all the work.
I own a 2007 Ford F350 single rear wheel. I want to convert it to a dually. Can I just change the rear hubs or do I have to change the axles also? I'm not worried abu=out the front because I can carry both spares.
Where can I get the new or used dually hubs?
1. you should make a new thread for this question. last post was 2002
2. you should ask this question in the newer model forum so that people who know about your year truck.
