im not sure about the flatbed part, but my truck has provisions for 3 tanks.

i dont think 3 tanks is common though, the rear tank on my truck is gone and the hole is capped, not sure if it came factory this way, but the cap is color of the rest of the truck.

Are you talking about a regular flatbed or the stakebed? I didn't think a flatbed was an option, only the cab and chassis and then people would put whatever they wanted on for a bed. The stakebed was an option and I know Dennis has a brochure picture showing that. If it was just a cab and chassis, It probably didn't come with the 2 rear tanks only the in cab.

Up Until 76 you could order the tank behind the seat and you could get dual tanks in the bed as well. A friend ordered a 76 4X4 new and wanted the dual tanks in the bed and none behind the seat and it caused alot of grief. IN the end he had to order the truck with 3 tanks an delete the tank behind the seat to get the twin tanks in the bed. Very confusing situation.

Trucks are made up by Ford to put on Dealerships lots , plus they could be ordered as a Cab & Chassis so anything could be mounted on them.

Most were Cab & Chassis

the rear frame was widened for 73, allowing for relocation of tank from cab to rear....optionally an additional tank could be located forward under left side of the bed, requiring a second fill opening and door in the bedside....a 2-way electrical switch in the cab controls which tank is drawn from....

i haven't seen or heard of cab tanks (behind seat) in 73 and newer....i suppose it's possible, even likely, particularly with certain types of specialized rear bodies or delivery as cab/chassis....a truck with both a rear tank AND a cab tank would seem odd, let alone all three....

ok, cab tanks were still done, most likely when built w/o beds...and many flatbed fitups would include a large-truck style 'saddle' tank or tanks...we had a 66 f-600 (2-ton) for many years with cab tank and an added-on saddle tank...there was a mechanical diverter valve installed next to the driver's door opening to switch between the cab and saddle tanks....

the million dollar question might be whether any pickups were factory-produced with both cab tank and the styleside bed (which comes standard with at least the rear-tank filler provision)....it seems very plausible, since the one shouldn't conflict with the other....then the electric switch could be used to change between cab and rear tanks....further, the styleside bed with the 2 fillers could be installed, and the optional 'middle' tank added....then you'd have three.....

of course the cab tank is generally considered undesirable owing to issues of fumes in the cab and safety....but back in the day, people were looking to add fuel capacity to cope with the shortages and rationing

Or maybe take a look at this site

I got a 76 F250 4x4 Highboy Ranger XLT and its gas tank is behind the seat in the cab and it has two aftermarket external tanks, one on each side of the bed

You could get all three tanks in a 150 with the bed. As i mentioned before, a friend of mine ordered his 76 with dual tanks, I belive the story went like this, He wanted the dual tanks in the bed, but ford said no, 1 in the bed and 1 behind the seat unkless he ordered all 3 tanks. So he ordered all 3 tanks, Front bed tank and the behind the seat tank were both considered options, and then had them delete the in cab tank. He has been trying to understand Ford logic on this gor over 32 years and still doesn't get the theory behind it. But you could have a regular cab 150 with the bed and have all 3 tanks up to 76. I have never understood the logic behind this either.

hmmmm....as we generally know, it's common to see 'dual tank' f-series of 70s-80s era with the two filler doors, one for the standard rear tank and the other for the optional 'middle'.....and you really 'never' see these have a third one in the cab.....so it doesn't seem to make sense that a cab tank would have to go along with getting the 'middle' one.....but it would be interesting to see a factory 3-tank setup and how much the total capacity would be....

one question does occur- when was the 'middle' tank (filler forward of wheel opening) first offered? 73? it might have not come out until later
