Hi all, I know that this is discussed quite often. I am not looking to start an argument, but I was looking at an '04 f350 with the 6.0 powerstroke. Is this engine really junk? The truck has 60k miles and an automatic, extended cab, short bed, 4x4 (I would prefer a manual, but they're hard to find in NJ). I know there is a post somewhaere in this forum with a whole bunch of thingstoo look at on a used super duty, so I'll bring that with me next time. Also, this might be a dumb question, bu the hubs have the lock or free hand turns on them, but in the cab the drive selection is a 3 position **** on the dash, not a stick. Is this ESOF? And if so, is ESOF really just another thing that breaks and is totaly unnecessary? we have owned 4x4 trucks with completely manuall 4x4 in the past, and it was not a pain to engage 4x4, so i don't see the need for ESOF.
Thanks,
Jack
I wouldn't say they are all junk, just that some have had issues...get an oasis report and make your judgements from that.
that is ESOF you are referring to. i have had it on two trucks and 89 ranger and my f250 and never any problems, you just have to have the tires turning to engage it in high range. others i'm sure will chime in if they've had problems.
The hubs come in Auto or locked position, the ESOF is better for when you just quickly need 4x4 to get yourself off some ice or something like that, don't need to get out of the truck to lock the hubs
Get a VIN number and run an OASIS report. The 2006 / 2007 trucks have a very good reliability history but even with them, this doesn't mean there can't be some problems. I would also get a CARFAX report if all this checks out. After you get the OASIS, then find out how he treated it (unless you know already).
Some 6.0L weak points: Lots of idling - hope not?
Filter change intervals on time? What kind of oil (CI4+ or CJ4)?
OEM filters? Look at them and see what kind they are.
Tuner - what kind?
Aftermarket air filter?
Did he have any problems - fluid leaks, EGR valve, stuck turbo?
Did he ever run it empty on fuel or have plugged filters?
I look at the hours on the engine (if it has this monitored) and divide the miles by the hours (is it below 30? If so, may have had lots of idling)
CEL light on? Consider getting a code reader and check for DTC's
Then the common stuff I'm sure you know:
Look at and smell the fluids
Drive it - surges? Stutters? Rattles or clunks? Good acceleration?
Test out the 4WD
Check the tires - should have over half the life left at this mileage - abnormal wear?
All electronics working?
Dents? Air bag been replaced, etc.
See if he has any repair or maintenance records.
