Idi?

Another dumb question ... I know that IDI means In Direct Injection ... But what qualifies as direct or indirect injection?

I know throttle-body injection ...

IDI and DI refer to where the fuel is injected.
Indirect injection: the fuel is injected in a prechamber, ignites and spreads into the main chamber over the piston.

Direct injection: The injection nozzle is placed inside the combustion chamber and the piston incorporates a depression where initial combustion takes place. Direct injection diesel engines are generally more efficient and cleaner than indirect injection engines.

The same applies for gas engines, although there arent many DI gas engine out yet.

Tanx a bunches ... Simple terms I can understand ... I wonder why they invented the IDI in the first place ... Seems to me that they would have done DI in the first place instead of going to all the trouble to make a diff chamber as well as the bore ... Oh well ...

Direct injection motors are generally louder. Not really the case as much anymore. pre-combustion motors were a thing of the past. The purpose of them were to help with fuel ignition. Back then injection pressures weren't near as high as today and the fuel wouldn't atomize as well. The turbulance chambers that we have in our motors were strictly for noise.

Indirect injection is not without it's advantages. Although it's not as effecient as DI, IDI engines seem to be a bit more hearty. From what I've read they don't seem to be as sensitive to lower quality fuels. Also, due to the fact that injection pressures are lower, we have less complex (read cheaper) injectors. Go price some from any DI diesel and compare with any IDI diesel.........you'll see what I mean. So.......we have our good points as well

I think I will keep my NA IDI diesel ... Sounds like a good thing ... Now I just need to make it a bit more efficient and quieter ...
