OK I just got myself some GT40P heads complete with exaust manafolds from an explorer. I'm hoping to use these on a 393 build up in my 4x4 RV van.
1st Question, I would like to keep compersion down to 9.5. I think Hypernewmatic pistons are the way to go. This engine will not be seeing high RPM. I want low end tork. Anyone have any sugjestions on a good piston for the application.
2nd Question, I have seen a number of stroker cranks come up on ebay. Some as low as $280 for buy it now. What do you think about using one of these cheaper cranks, cast I beleave, as apposed to a SCAT crank. Remember this engine will not be seeing high RPM. Its going in a 4x4 motor home. 5.5k tops.
3erd Qusetion, Cams... Any ideas?
4th Question, anyidea if the stock explorer exaust manafolds will work in an 85 van...
KB Pistons makes a hyperU specifically for the 393 (part # KB364), CR would be 9.5 to 10 depending on deck clearance.

I would go with a quality crank, its the part that under goes severe stress. SVO Ford has a steel stroker which is a better bet for a high torque application like what you intend. ($535):-staun

As for the cam, its always best to check with the cam grinder, let them know your intentions for the motor, and let them make a recommendation. I would bet somewhere in the 272 degree (adv) range, but still check with the grinder.
How cool, I have an 85 F-150 with a 393 stroker and run the same gt-40 p heads, I used a 218/222 comp exteme cam and love the tourque at the bottom end and still have vacum!! As far as manifold go, find an early mustang or T-bird with a 302, some came out with factory shortie headers and that is what I used because mine is a 4x4 and they were easier to install.
you'll like the combo, I'm running 35's c-6, 4.56 gears and can roast them in first and second from a dead stop, no power stall!!!!
Since the 393 stroker piston is nothing more than a 302 piston, just go thru www.kb-silvolite.com (or other makers) until you find the one that will give you the compression you want. (They have an easy to use compression calculator too.) The crank is purely a judgement call; as long as cast cranks aren't subjected to high rpm or continued shock loading from dropping the clutch, they are just as strong as anything else. I'd be more concerned with the quality of the machine work (radiused fillets and corectly indexed journals) and balancing.
Personally, when I build up my 393 Stroker, I am planning on putting the Cleveland heads on it and doing the runover to the 393 Clevor.
Next time you get the change, punch the numbers into the Dyno and you will see that this motor makes POWER Its just that its becoming increasingly harder to find the parts to make a proper Clevor engine anymore. I just though I would share my intentions for a project like this though.
The only 393 Clevor buildup I've heard of used the 3.85" stroke crank reground for BB Chevy 2.20" rod journals, narrowed BB Chevy rods with pin bores bushed down to SB Chevy .927" and Keith Black #285 pistons. The custom intake is available from DSC Motorsports and Crane has the special length pushrods.
