A/C Problems..Got Answers?

Howdy y'all! I've got two A/C problems and I thought I'd run them through the FTE peanut gallery first...

I've searched, and read a whole mess of posts about the A/C blower only working on the highest setting, and my problem is sort of the opposite of that. My fan works on all settings except the lowest! There is only the slightest hint of air coming through the registers. My wife thought I was crazy, so I taped a piece of string to one of the registers; lo and behold, the string didn't move. The lowest setting was perfect at keeping the cab (and the wife) at just the right temperature, the 2nd fan position, and higher, turns my truck into a meat locker. Any clues on what this could be?

In addition to this, the cooling of the A/C has begun to intermittently come and go. It'll be freezing the boogers in my nose one minute, and the next it'll blow hot. This happens on both 'A/C' and 'MAX A/C' positions. Sometimes it'll do it two or three times in a day...then other times it won't show up again for weeks.

If anyone has any insight on either of the topics, I'd be much obliged!

By the way, this is on a regular '****' A/C control system, not one of the new fancy electronic display systems.

First problem sounds like a bad fanspeed switch, second problem would be vacuum related/blend door.

First problem could also be the resistor block. I don't think the blend door is vacuum operated. I'm pretty sure that one is a continuously variable door controlled by a cable. The doors that are open/closed are vacuum operated (like floor/front/def doors).

Sounds like it's freezing up the evaporator. Since it blows super cold it could be low on freon, operating near 32 degrees.

Run to Harbor Freight and get a set of gauges, $29! http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=92649

Does road speed or RPM make a differance on how it works? Could be anything from a plugged condensor to a bad clutch on the compressor. More info needed.

Nope, it's independent of RPM and road speed.

That second problem really sounds like the air gap needs to be re-shimmed properly.

It's easy to do yourself. Do a search on "air gap", and you'll find a thread that covers it well.
