Stright piped 460?

Howdy, i'm 16 and ive had my truck for a while and I am in the stage in my life where I am almost positive a crazy loud exausht will make me cool. (I already am cool by the way ) So I was just going to cut my 97' 460's exausht off right before the cat. I was wondering if that would drop the back presseure to much and cause my truck to not want to start and lose alot of low end? Any thing helps thanks

You'll be sorry ! I had an older 460 with headers /dual glasspaks on it and while it sounded really awesome it got old pretty quick , a little too awesome so to speak like blowing out folks eardrums at stoplights , like waking the whole neighborhood in the mornings on the way to work , like not being able to sneak down the street , or three block radius for that matter.

But im an old fart now so maybe it's just me !

id look for that mean low rumble from like a flowmaster or a magnaflow 45'd out infron of the rear tires that would sound pretty sweet IMO

Doing it won't make you cool. It'll make you obnoxious and annoying. At least it would to me. We had a young man down the road do this to his Olds and when he would come home from work at midnight, it literally would wake up everyone in the neighborhood. I got fed up with it and dropped by and asked him to do something about it. He refused so I called the law and began the process of pressing charges for disturbing the peace. All of a sudden he was really interested in fixing the problem. Here's the twist, I offered to help him get it set up so it would rumble real sweet and not **** everyone off. He accepted and now drops by all the time with questions about his car.

I don't think you realize how much noise your truck will make by chopping the exhaust before the cat.

And trust me friend, no girl wants to ride around in a truck that's loud and obnoxious. But she might want to ride in one that's got a really nice rumble to it.

Cutting the pipe won't hurt the motor, I ran for a while with manifolds and nothing else, but I recommend cutting the pipe, and putting in a cutout, because there will be times when you want to not be heard, and the roar gets old on long trips.

I dont think it would sound cool just dumping out of the cat. Get an exhuast system with either flowmasters or glasspacks. Than it would sound cool.

You'll lose some low end power if you do cut it off..I would stick to some sort of mufflers..I had mine cut off for a bit the low end power was decreased and you could not talk to anyone in the truck and my friends the road in the ext cab part on a 50 mile trip to the exhaust shop pretty much were deaf by the time we got there..chewie1040 is right girls don't dig trucks like that...My girlfriend wouldn't even ride in there with me..I had to use my moms truck to go hang out with here. All the guys think its really sweet untill they ride in it too...

Yeah, don't do that. I had my 302 with just longtubes and straight pipes dumped behind the cab and it was obnoxious man. That lasted a whole 3 days. Now I have longtubes with side pipes and cherry bomb mufflers and it still doesnt sound as good as my old factory cats/H-pipe dumped through a 3" pipe behind the cab. You may want to give that a try. Not mufflers, just factory cats and a 3" pipe.

There is my truck with factory cats and single 3" pipe.

Here it is now with my sidepipes, not as nice IMO.

I mean, I know its only a 302, but you see how it affects the sound.

My brother's '89 F350 had duals off the manifolds with an H pipe and dual flowmaster 40's, dumped right after the rear axle.

Sounded cool, but if you were driving at 50-60 mph so the drone would absolutely drive you bonkers. I rode up to a mud bog with him one time, we came back a different way that was pretty flat and straight and it was giving me a headache.

ok wow I didnt think so many people would have so much to say, Yah I suppose you are all right, the truck probably would be obnoxious and annoying. I am just glad I asked before I did anything, I do need to make my 460 sound like the big block it is. Now I am on the fence between glass packs or something like a super 40. And I am NOT cutting it off before the cat, I am going to cut it off after the cat and see how it is. Are the glass packs really loud also? Alright thanks again

i have a 95 F250 with 5.8l 351 that i had duals installed on it by an exhaust shop and i didnt like the tone of it. So i decided to cut it right off before the cat like you. The noise was far too loud. I couldnt even drive my truck 10 miles to town without gettin a bad headache. I then switched it to glasspacks and dumped before the rear tires and that is plenty loud under throttle. Go with glass packs and run duals or dump it before the rear id say, but if you like the feeling of your head pounding or like you just got hit in the head by a 10 lb sledge go ahead and cut it right of. Just my personal opinion

I had a 96 460 i cut it ahead of the cat and went with single 3" exiting in the stock location behind rear tire with a 40 flowmaster it sounded good and didnt get annoying on the long trips. It also improved my mileage upto 14-15 mpg on the highway.
