Well...title pretty much says it all. I have been getting oil thru my breather for a while now. I took a trip this weekend and it got a helluva lot worse. Bad enough that i was losing a quart about every 100 miles. Made a lot of nice white smoke as i went down the highway. I tried plugging the breather tube, but it would then push the PCV out of the valve cover within 30 seconds. I'm stuck between either burnt/stuck valve or bad rings. Compression test this week (and leak down test if i can get a tester)...what do y'all think? No codes. I've replaced A LOT of stuff trying to diagnose this problem and in doing so found that initially the plug in #5 cylinder is "wet" with oil when pulled out. Have replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, O2 sensor, fuel filter, IAT sensor, check all other sensor, inspected for vacuum leaks, pulled and tested driver's side fuel injectors...probably more, this has been ongoing for like a month now. Suggestions appreciated.
I had a '93 with the same problem on a road trip. I thought it was a burnt valve also. I blew a hole in the on the outside edge of the piston just above the rings. The piece fell down into the cylinder & scored the hell out of it. Long story short, needed a new short block.
I have the same problem. Bought a 1995 xlt rc 4x4 302 5spd with 104k on it 2 months ago. It is now sitting at the dealer waiting for the warranty rep to look at it to determine if they are going to pay for a rebuild or a new short block. Good luck. Ron
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Nov-02 AT 02:39 PM (EST)]I got the engine torn down this week. Found that the bad cylinder is missing a piece of the outer edge of the piston about 1" long and 1/8" wide. :-( :-( Probably going to pull the motor, replace that piston, re-ring all 8 and replace the rod and main bearings. If money permits i'll have the heads reworked too.
got the motor out last friday. took it to the machine shop monday and they called me back today with an estimate...~$600 just for machining. It needs to be bored over .030 but i'll probably have them do it .040 b.c. i can get a good deal on a brand new set of rods and pistons from someone who doesnt need them, never used 'em. Can someone tell me what this does to displacement? Wont be a 302 anymore, but what will it be? Thx. Wish me luck.
I'm guessin' 308? Somebody else will have to correct me if i'm wrong. Good luck w/ the engine, and do the heads. I put just a new set of heads on my 5.0 with 160,000 mi because I burned a valve, and you wouldnt believe the difference. Big power improvement.
Good luck with the machining, I have a 95 5.0 with 193,000 miles on it and no engine problems so far other than a Throttle Position Sensor. I think My Automatic Tranny is taking a dump soon though. It wants to shutter into overdrive now.
Dang, hit the wrong button. You'd have 307.65cid with a .040" overbore, but I'd be hesitant to go that far unless you had no choice. Most folks recommend nothing over +.030" for late castings. I said wow in the other post for a reason. For $600, you can get the Summit block plus a 3.25" stroker crank from Scat, pick up a set of inexpensive 350V8 Chevy pistons and be well on your way to building a 327.
