Well, the previous owner of my E350 really did a number on this thing. When I got into some other repairs, I noticed that the choke thermostat is missing from the carb. It has apparently fallen off/been removed, and the choke is held open with a piece of wire. Is it safe to assume that this is the main reason it's been running rich?
My main question is this: I've been looking for a replacement thermostat, and I'm not entirely sure which one I need. One site references them by the Ford part # on the carb, but I can't find it. The only numbers I see are 80457-2 D439. I assume this is a Holley part #. Is the Ford part # anywhere on the carb?
I can't help you with the part numbers, but if the choke is open, it's running lean, not rich. With the choke closed, it reduces the oxygen and increases fuel to the cylinders; more knowledgeable members may correct on this.
